Managerless Barnsley scored two second-half goals to defeat Crewe Alexandra at Oakwell.

Lewin Nyatanga headed them in front from Josh Scowen’s 66th minute free-kick before an own-goal from Alex’s debutant goalkeeper Paul Rachubka settled the contest.

The visitors thought they should have been given a penalty midway through the opening half when Marcus Haber went down in the box but the referee waved away claims.

At the other end Leroy Lita delivered an inviting ball but Kane Hemmings somehow failed to get on the end of it when just a couple of yards out.

Barnsley still went in front courtesy of defender Nyatanga’s close-range header before, with eleven minutes remaining, Crewe’s substitute keeper Rachubka mishandled a routine corner into his own net.

Free-agent Rachubka had only signed for the club yesterday and was given an early call following a 71st minute injury to regular shot-stopper Ben Garratt.

Alex’s Canadian forward Haber had gone close with a header during the opening half and also later struck against the legs of goalkeeper Adam Davies.
