Crewe Alexandra went out of the Johnstone’s Paint Trophy as Wigan Athletic twice came from behind at Gresty Road.

A frantic start witnessed Sanmi Odelusi immediately being denied by Ben Garratt from the penalty spot after a trip by Jon Guthrie, before Brad Inman set up Marcus Haber for the opening goal.

The visitors had already struck the crossbar and Yanic Wildschut knocked back another corner for Jordy Hiwula to equalise within five minutes.

George Cooper nearly restored the home lead when forcing a save from Jussi Jaaskelainen, who was though beaten as Ryan Colclough’s shot squirmed under his body nine minutes from half-time.

Crewe lost centre-back George Ray on a stretcher following extended treatment early in the second-half, and Hiwula soon tucked in Wildschut’s cross after Donervon Daniels struck the woodwork.

On loan Middlesbrough winger Wildschut then broke away and finished spectacularly for what proved the winner six minutes later.

Home striker Haber (twice) and substitute Lauri Dalla Valle both went close to an equaliser in the closing moments.
