Crewe Alexandra earned the bragging rights over their neighbours by completing a tremendous league double at Port Vale.
On loan striker Nicky Ajose scored the winner six minutes before the break after already having a penalty saved by Chris Neal.
Chris Birchall struck wide early on for the home side and Ben Garratt thwarted Ben Williamson before Neal brought down Ajose.
However, Vale’s keeper instantly redeemed himself by saving Ajose’s 25th minute penalty.
But the on loan Leeds United striker continued to be a threat and twice more went close, until racing onto Jamie Ness’ pass and shooting low past the keeper.
Goalscorer Ajose had another opportunity after the break and the hosts responded with a triple substitution before Williamson and Chris Lines were both near to equalising.
Fellow substitute Tom Pope next headed straight at Garratt and Lines’ deflected effort struck the crossbar as the visitors held on for victory.
