There have been three competitive fixtures on September 21st in the 25-year period, taking place in 2002, 2004 and 2013.

The game in 2002 saw Crewe Alexandra host Tranmere Rovers at the Alexandra Stadium. A Tom Curtis own goal gave the hosts the lead on 57 minutes with Rob Hulse extending the lead 17 minutes from time.

The game in 2004 saw us host Sunderland in the League Cup. Steve Jones gave the Alex a 19th minute lead before Chris Brown equalised 8 minutes before the break. Dean Ashton scored in the 64th minute before Brown equalised again in the 83rd minute. Substitute Stephen Elliott scored in the 103rd minute with Steve Foster sent the game to penalties after his 119th minute leveller. Crewe won the shootout 4-2 and faced Manchester United in the next round.
