Crewe Alexandra On This Day – April 2nd

In this column, we look at games played by Crewe Alexandra have played on April 2nd in the last 20 years.

2005 – Crewe 1-1 Nottingham Forest:

The first game of this round-up came 15 years ago with a home game against Forest. Scott Dobie gave the visitors the lead 8 minutes before half-time with Neil Sorvel levelling the score on 71 minutes. Future Alex loanee striker Gareth Taylor would play the full game for the visitors.

2010 – Morecambe 4-3 Crewe:

We travelled to Morecambe’s Christie Park 10 years ago. Joel Grant and Shaun Miller would give the Alex a 2-0 lead at the break. Phil Jevons would halve the deficit 8 minutes after half-time with Donaldson extending the lead on 63 minutes. Morecambe would end up winning after 3 goals in the final 5 minutes through Wayne Curtis, current Alex manager David Artell (himself a half-time substitute) and Paul Mullin. Former Alex full-back Darren Moss would also come on for the final 8 minutes.

2011 – Crewe 8-1 Cheltenham Town:

Clayton Donaldson opened the scoring for the Alex on 4 minutes before that lead was doubled 7 minutes later by Shaun Miller. Donaldson scored his second in the 33rd minute with Joel Grant scoring his first 4 minutes later. Wes Thomas got one back for the visitors before A.R. Westwood, Donaldson (pen) and Grant (2 goals, 1 pen) finished the game off for the Alex

2016 – Peterborough United 3-0 Crewe:

4 years ago saw a trip to London Road to face Peterborough. Harry Beautyman scored twice in the first half before Lee Angol would add the third midway through the second half.

2018 – Crewe 2-2 Port Vale:

The final game of this column saw Port Vale make the short trip to the Alexandra Stadium. Ryan Wintle gave the Alex the lead after 7 minutes with Tom Pope (who played the first 84 minutes) levelling from the penalty spot 9 minutes before the break. Antony Kay gave Vale the lead with 20 minutes to play with Charlie Kirk levelling the score in stoppage-time.
