Crewe Alexandra On This Day – April 16th

In this column, we look at how Crewe Alexandra have done on this day in the previous 20 years.

2001 – Crewe 2-1 Gillingham:

The first game of this round-up came 19 years ago with Gillingham making the long trip to the Alexandra Stadium. Alan Navarro gave the Alex the lead in the 9th minute with Chris Hope equalising just before the break and Dean Ashton scoring the winner on 59 minutes.

2005 – Gillingham 1-1 Crewe:

The second game saw the Alex make the same journey in reverse. David Vaughan gave the visitors the lead on 73 minutes with Nicky Southall levelling 7 minutes later.

2011 – Crewe 1-1 Lincoln City:

Game 3 saw Lincoln travel to the Alexandra Stadium. Paul Green (not the current Alex player) gave the visitors the lead 2 minutes after half-time with Clayton Donaldson equalising 13 minutes from time from the penalty spot.

2013 – Swindon Town 4-1 Crewe:

2 years later saw a trip to the County Ground to face Swindon. 2 Adam Rooney goals either side of a Massimo Luongo saw the hosts 3-0 up after 25 minutes. Harry Davis scored a penalty to reduce the deficit from the penalty spot with James Collins scoring the host’s 4th goal. Former Alex loanee Gary Roberts played the full game for the hosts.

2016 – Crewe 2-3 Scunthorpe United:

The final game of the column took place 4 years ago with Scunthorpe travelling to the Alexandra Stadium. Oliver Turton gave the Alex the lead on 15 minutes before Luke Williams equalised 2 minutes before half-time. Second-half goals from Hakeeb Adelakun and Williams gave Scunny the victory, despite Marcus Haber’s 79th-minute goal.
