The first month is over, like a flash; completed.

Crewe`s start and the way you look at it, for me, all depends on what type of character you are as a person.

If you are a glass half full character, we have only lost once, pushed Blackburn all the way and have been involved in some, for the most part, largely entertaining games.

On the other hand, however, if you are a glass half empty; we have only won once in the league (the win at Accrington aside) and have already dropped six points in the league. Taking the second half collapses against Newport, Hartlepool and the cup tie at Blackburn into account.

In my own personal view; I am very much undecided. The standard of our start, in my eyes, largely depends on the next two games. We have a home double header coming up in the next two weeks, the first beginning against a Doncaster sitting in third place at the time of writing, having collected ten points from their opening five games.

The next is against Exeter, who have made the complete opposite start and sit second bottom having only accumulated three points from their opening month.

It might only be two games, but the way I`m going to pass judgement, afterwards is as follows:

Win them both, we have every chance of competing towards the top end of the table. I fancy Doncaster to be around the top anyway so a positive result against them would certainly do a lot to instill confidence if nothing else. Judging by the start Exeter have made, we really should be beating them at home anyway and one of the basics of a side that challenges towards the top is having the ability to beat the teams you should be beating, not just occasionally upsetting the odds.

Should we win one of them, or even take four points from these two – we might well still challenge up there, but to me, that signals that we`ll finish around about where I`m expecting; which for the record, is a higher mid-table position. Like I said in the last paragraph, it is only two games, I am aware of that. I have, however, based that opinion on the consideration that this would basically follow and maintain the inconsistency we have already shown. Meaning that we will show nothing to suggest that we will go on any serious run of form, but just enough to show that we can comfortably hold our own.

Two defeats and we really could be down there. We would have the gone six games without a league win at that point and the pressure will be well and truly on the manager. I have seen some people suggest that ten games will be the point where the club’s hierarchy will sit down and make a fair decision on the manager, so it is just as important for him as it will be to the fans for the next two results to go in our favour.

It is hard to judge just how the season will fare as, at the moment of writing, it is hard to develop a firm opinion on whether or not we should be optimistic, or pessimistic about the start we have made.

The next two games will go a long way to making a fair judgement. Let`s hope for six points.
