Crewe Alexandra went down to a second successive 3-0 home defeat as Gillingham earned their first win of the season at Gresty Road.
Cody McDonald gave the visitors the lead six minutes before the break and Joe Martin added another shortly after it. Adam Barrett then claimed a third to settle the issue with twenty minutes remaining.
Home manager Steve Davis was completing a century of games in charge but soon witnessed his son Harry being carried off with a suspected knee injury and replaced by Welsh teenager George Ray.
The Gills twice threatened early through former Coventry and Norwich striker McDonald while Chris Whelpdale failed to seriously trouble goalkeeper Steve Phillips.
But opportunities would actually prove rather short in supply, although Steven Gregory hoisted over for the visitors and Whelpdale had the ball in the net after fouling Phillips.
Crewe were struggling to create anything in reply and Byron Moore couldn’t get enough purchase on a Jon Guthrie cross. And they fell into arrears on 39 minutes as McDonald beat Phillips at his near post when avoiding the attentions of Ray.
Alex midfielder Ollie Turton cleared the crossbar after the break but it was their opponents extending their advantage as Charlie Lee was tripped on the edge of the area and Martin curled in the free-kick.
Lee could have added another when locating the foot of an upright following a slip from Thierry Audel before Danny Kedwell headed over from the corner.
The hosts replied with a double-change and one of their replacements, Vadaine Oliver, soon forced goalkeeper Stuart Nelson to block. His later volley produced another reaction from Nelson, who also kept out Audel from distance after Danny Hollands had already curled wide at the other end.
But Gillingham confirmed their supremacy as skipper Barrett found the roof of the net after Crewe had failed to clear from a long throw. Lee later called Phillips into further action while substitute Lee Molyneux struck wide in reply.
