Goals in each half from Danilo Orsi and Liam Kelly saw Crawley Town earn promotion against Crewe Alexandra at Wembley Stadium yesterday.
Manager Lee Bell named an unchanged line-up from a 2-0 win at Doncaster in the second leg of the semi-finals as well as an unchanged bench, which again included no goalkeeper. Alex Academy alum Travis Johnson was not involved for the Sussex club.
The game’s opening chance of the game came in the 15th minute with Kelly firing over before the midfielder would have an effort saved by Max Stryjek 3 minutes later. The first Alex chance came 8 minutes before the break as Cody Addai palmed an Elliott Nevitt shot from just outside the area around the post for a corner before Crawley took the lead 5 minutes later, a 1-2 between Kelly and Orsi allowed the forward to wrong foot Ed Turns to finish into the bottom corner.
Into the second half where the Alex looked to have been offered a lifeline back level as Chris Long took advantage of a sloppy pass going one-on-one with Addai, rounding the keeper before going down with referee Ben Toner giving a penalty only for VAR Michael Salisbury to overturn the decision before Kelly would again be denied by Stryjek 12 minutes from time. The second goal of the game came 5 minutes from time as Kelly was played in behind by captain Dion Conroy’s through-ball, his square pass intercepted by Mickey Demetriou with the midfielder scoring the rebound.
That was the final game of the season with the fixtures for the 24/25 season being released on Wednesday 26th June at 9.00 am ahead of the season starting on the weekend of 10th August.
Final Thoughts:
A disappointing result on the day but I don’t think we can be disappointed with the season overall although it could have been a different story if Long scored the effort that was presented to him instead of trying to round Addai as that may have kickstarted our game.
We were beaten well by the better team on the day and congratulations to Crawley on their promotion.
