Constantine Was A Target

The club has missed out on signing former Port Vale striker Leon Constantine as he looks set to join Leeds United.

With Varney gone, the need for an extra striker is proving a headache. Tom Pope & Ryan Lowe aren’t showing enough in the role to prove they can fill the gap, whilst the club were snubbed in a move for Tottenham striker Lee Barnard a few weeks back.

Dario has admitted that one name on the shortlist was Leon Constantine, who netted 26 goals for Port Vale last season. However, the 28 year old looks set to sign for Leeds after spending much of the summer training with the Leeds squad.

Dario told crewealex.net that whilst the club expressed an interest, personal terms were never discussed:

‘We talked about Constantine before he signed for Leeds and someone contacted us to see if we would be interested. I said yes, because I thought he was the type of player we needed up there,

‘He would have done us, because he has that presence and is a proven goalscorer at this level. It didn’t go as far as discussing money with him, but I would done that if I could.’

The club however is expected to try and complete a move to loan a striker from the Premiership this week, as revealed on Vital Crewe yesterday. It’s a position Dario feels needs filling quick.

‘If we were to go to Quorn and Alsager and not create too many chances, then we would really start to worry a bit.’
