Charlton Athletic have signed Crewe Alex striker Luke Varney in an initial £2million deal, rising to £2.5million dependant on appearances. Varney was always expected to be one of the next departures; despite Dario Gradi`s reluctance to sell it now appears that the offer was too much for the South Cheshire club to refuse.

Varney, who signed from non-league Quorn FC in 2003 went from strength to strength at Crewe, becoming the clubs top scorer this season with 25 goals in all competitions. His overall record came to 35 goals in 108 appearances. Charlton boss Alan Pardew, who once signed former academy star Dean Ashton to Upton Park believes that Varney will be the “perfect fit” as Charlton look to rebuild their squad for a promotion push back to the Premiership.

He’s diligent, intelligent, quick and a player that is going to get even better. We’ve beaten off stiff competition from both Championship and Premiership clubs to sign him – and I’d like to thank the board for backing my judgment on him” Pardew said.

ital Crewe would like to wish Luke Varney all the best for the future.
