Case for the defence

350 goals conceded in just 5 years, some record that. Dario reckons we will be better defensively this season, but do we actually believe him? The signing of Danny O`Donnell and Chris McCready should help matters at the back in the forthcoming season.

Last year the goals of Maynard and Varney stopped us from getting embroiled in a relegation scrap. With Varney moving on to pastures new it is likely that we won`t score as many so it is vital we plug the gap at the back.

Pre-season so far has indicated that their seems to be an impetus on becoming harder to beat and the players have had a clean sheet mentality drilled in to them over the summer by first team coach Steve Holland (pictured).

Also a more robust midfield should also give more protection for the back four, but hang on didn`t the management team say that the defence should improve this time last year? Cox and Baudet were hailed as the saviour of all things defensively but by the time we have eaten our Christmas dinner the partnership was shelved.

Is this yet another false dawn? I hope not, the defence this year needs to be watertight; it appears as if the management team are banking on the improvement of the backline to compensate for the loss of Luke Varney.

I am impressed with the work carried out by Holland on the training pitch, it has been encouraging in pre-season and they need to go out now and prove they have improved by keeping clean sheets in matches.

All signs are good, they look a lot more organised.
Mcready looks like twice the player that left us, Baudet is twice the player he was at this time last year, Woodards (defensively atleast) is a lot more solid than Semi, from what I’ve seen of Billy Jones 2 he’s a decent player and Abbey is going to be decent at this level.
The new midfielders, particularly Schumacher should provide a lot more protection which I suspect was a much bigger issue last season than the back 4 itself.

But (and it’s a big but) you never can tell from pre-season. I don’t know what’s going to happen come Saturday but I do know that I’m looking forward to finding out.
