Burton Batter Alex After Dominant First-Half

|

First-half goals from Harry Chapman, John Brayford and Kane Hemmings helped Burton Albion to a crushing home win against Crewe Alexandra, despite Tom Lowery’s equaliser for the visitors, with substitute Daniel Jebbison adding the fourth goal late on.

Manager David Artell made one change from Wednesday’s 2-1 win at Morecambe with Kayne Ramsay replacing the injured Rio Adebisi in the Alex back 5 (Callum Ainley switching sides to left wing-back) with Joel Tabiner on the substitutes bench for the first time in League football. Former Alex players Ben Garratt and Brayford were both in the hosts’ starting line-up, the latter their captain.

The opening chance and goal of the game came in the 6th minute with Chapman breaking down the Brewers’ left, beating Billy Sass-Davies’ challenge before rolling the ball into the bottom corner. The Alex would level a dozen minutes later as Lowery would take advantage of a mis-controlled touch from Charlie Lakin and unleashing a 25-yard drive into the top corner though parity wouldn’t last too long as a long throw from Tom Hamer wasn’t dealt with as the Burton skipper would score at the back post at the second attempt on 24 minutes.

Hemmings would add the third in the 33rd minute with a dipping volley from just outside the area before former Burton midfielder Luke Murphy would have a shot straight at Garratt before the end of the half. The fourth would come in stoppage-time as substitute Joe Powell played through Jebbison to tuck under Richards.

Our next couple of games sees the Alex hosting Rotherham United in the EFL Trophy on Tuesday before returning to league action at home to Charlton Athletic the following Wednesday.

What can we take out of this game?

It’s another poor performance in front of a relatively large Alex away following – some soft goals, very little creativity and a referee that wouldn’t give us anything.

One thing that was a positive was Tabiner again coming off the bench, for an 8-minute league debut, and hopefully, he (and some of the other scholars) will be seen a little more this season after their FA Youth Cup exploits.
