Former Crewe captain Dave Brammer is once again being linked with a return to his former club. Brammer was reportedly unsettled at Stoke earlier in the summer with Crewe suggested to be interested, though the signing of Tony Grant seemed to quash any possibilities of Brammer returning.

However, Grant has struggled for fitness and fellow midfielder Lee Bell has a broken foot, leaving minimal competition for places in the centre of Crewe’s midfield. Dario has recently declared that he is on the lookout for a new goalkeeper, striker and midfielder, suggesting that these rumours may have more credibility than those which arose earlier in the summer.

Stoke have recently signed Jeff Whitley on loan, who seems likely to occupy one of the central midfield positions, whilst Aliou Cissé is currently on trial at the Britannia Stadium.

Brammer’s controversial move to Stoke in 2004 angered many Crewe supporters, though at least as many fans were angrier with Dario Gradi for failing to offer Brammer a longer contract. Although now 31-years of age, it seems likely that Brammer would be welcomed back to Crewe by the Alex fans, who enjoyed Brammer’s presence in the centre.
