Manager Steve Davis took encouragement from a disappointing opening day as Crewe Alexandra finally surrendered their unbeaten run following a 2-1 victory by Notts County at Gresty Road.

“In terms of the attitude and application that they put in, and the fantastic amount of work they put in, I thought it was a decent performance” – Steve Davis

Home striker Mathias Pogba was on the mark for the third time in two games but his colleagues were twice undone at the other end by their opponents, who had goalscorer Yoann Arquin dismissed on the hour.

“I was encouraged,” Davis said to BBC Radio Stoke. “It was a disappointing result, but in terms of the attitude and application that they put in, and the fantastic amount of work they put in, I thought it was a decent performance.

“They [Notts County] didn’t disappoint. I thought they were decent,” he added. “We made one mistake and they punished us. That was the difference I think.”
