Baker-Richardson Goal Sees Third Win Of The Season

Courtney Baker-Richardson’s second goal of the season in the first half was enough for Crewe Alexandra to defeat Sutton United at the Alexandra Stadium last night, the hosts’ third win of the season in their four league games.

Manager Alex Morris made one change from Saturday’s 3-0 defeat at Salford City as Baker-Richardson came in for the suspended Bassala Sambou with Connor Evans making the bench for the first time this season.

The visitors had the opening chance of the game in the 9th minute with midfielder George Honeyman having an effort saved by Arthur Okonkwo before the Alex opened the scoring 3 minutes later as Dan Agyei beat full-back Jonathan Barden and then crossed for CBR to convert from 12 yards. Lachlan Brook would fire a shot over the bar before Kelvin Mellor couldn’t finish a cross from Agyei. Sutton’s best chance came on the stroke of half-time as Beautyman hit the bar from the edge of the area.

Agyei would attempt to chip goalkeeper Jack Rose who tipped it over the bar just after the hour mark before an inswinging free-kick was headed goalwards with Okonkwo making the save low down.

The next games for the Alex see a home game against Northampton Town on Saturday before a trip to Bradford City the following Saturday.

What can we take out of this game?

It’s another game where we have battled to get a win against a team that was aggressive in tackles. A decent sprint from Agyei to set up the goal which CBR attacked well before having enough defensive resilience to get a second clean sheet at home this season.
