It’s going to take a minor miracle to get out of this now. With only champions Leicester left to play we a minimum of 3 points and a whole load of results to go our way.

We are still awaiting Saturday’s results after last night’s 4-3 defeat at Stockport. Whilst we can’t go down this afternoon we can certainly step a foot into the basement. Wins for Northampton and Brighton would leave us needing to overturn a 20 goal difference between us and the Cobblers, even the most optimistic fan will accept defeat on that one.

It would of course also be dependent on Northampton losing their final game in hand this Tuesday, we could in fact be relegated before the final game of the season next week if results go the wrong way today and Northampton pick up a point against MK Dons on Tuesday.

After the season we’ve had it’s no more surprising than the previous relegations from the Championship in recent years but it’s a whole lot more gutting. You felt real emotion at the end of last night’s lacklustre performance against Stockport.

At the end of November many thought we’d be down before Easter came but it soon turned to be by the end of February that many expected safety by February. Gudjon’s turn around lifted everyone, brought back some of the lost fans and had a lot of people hopeful for next season.

It now all looks to count for nothing, trips to Burton, Accrington and maybe Histon are on the cards next season and who knows who’ll be joining us.

With Baudet confirming his departure last week it looks likely that Danny Woodards & Michael O’Connor will join him. Ruddy won’t be extending his loan deal, neither will Sigurdsson and it throws permanent moves for Lawrence and Broomes into doubt. ‘Star players’ like John Brayford could also be tempted away from Gresty Road.

And who will be our manager? Will Gudjon stay or will he be pushed… or will he simply accept defeat and walk away? His job upon arrival was to keep us up and it looks like he has failed. Do we stick with him because we went down fighting or do we take the harsher approach?

Most fans will be firmly behind Thordarson but it’s up to Gudjon and the club and I’m not sure, I think there’s a twist in that one yet.

I may return to eat my words – I hope I do – but right now I’m weighing up League Two. Is it going be a good promotion push or mid-table fodder? We can’t go down again. Can we?

  • We beat Leicester 2-0, Brighton lose 3-0 at home to Stockport and Carlisle fail to win and we’re safe, unlikely i know but stranger things have happened

  • It never hurts to dream but I think in this case it is beyond you guys to stay up but the best of luck
