Scunthorpe boss Nigel Atkins has described Dario Gradi as ‘the grandmaster’ of managers. Atkins, a managerial newbie, has excelled in his new role leading Scunthorpe clear at the top of League One, allaying fears that the Iron would hit freefall following the departures of Brian Laws and Andy Keogh.

Ahead of tonight’s game, Atkins said, ‘Dario Gradi was on the staff when I took my coaching badge many years ago – he’s the grandmaster. That’s the role model for small clubs like us, with a nice little tidy ground and we’ve got to produce our own and sell players on. It’s achievable and we’ve got to look at it and say ‘yes, we can get to the Championship and yes, we can compete’.’
