Adam May’s goal just before the half-time break would see Cambridge United defeat Crewe Alexandra at the Abbey Stadium yesterday as the hosts completed a league double over the visitors.
Manager David Artell made two changes from last Saturday’s 0-0 home draw against Shrewsbury Town with Zac Williams returning to the defence and Scott Robertson coming into midfield with Callum Ainley and Luke Murphy both dropping down to the bench.
The opening chance came in the 13th minute with Oli Finney volleying wide before Tom Lowery would have a long-range free-kick straight at U’s keeper Dimitar Mitov on the half-hour mark. The hosts would take the lead 3 minutes before the break with an Alex corner leading to a Cambridge break with Knibbs winning the ball before May would finish from outside the box via the crossbar.
Billy Sass-Davies would head a free-kick from Lowery wide with under 20 minutes to play as the Alex would have possession without doing a great deal with it.
Our next couple of games sees the Alex host Rotherham United next Saturday before traveling to Gillingham the following Tuesday.
What can we take out of this game?
It was another game where we conceded a simple, easily preventable goal down to a simple mistake against a team that was there for the taking.
It was a great strike from May, who also scored in the reverse fixture, but Richards may feel as though he could have saved it with it going just over him in the centre of the goal.
