Crewe have invited former Mansfield Town defender Jake Buxton on trial. The centre back left the Stags earlier in the summer following their relegation to the Blue Square Premier.

At 23, the commanding centre half has made well over 150 appearances for Mansfield since progressing through their youth system. Last season he was ever present in Town’s but picked up three red cards and eight yellow cards.

Buxton will spend the week trying to impress in the Alex in the hope of securing a contract, and could get a run out in one of tonight’s two friendlies at Quorn this evening.

Assistant manager Neil Baker told superalex.co.uk that they’d like to make quick decision: ‘He’s a player we’ve seen a few times. From what I’ve seen before, he’s a good defender who’s more than capable in the air.

‘We’ve brought him in on trial for this week and we’ll have to decide whether he’s someone we’d want for the season ahead. I’d expect us to make a decision on him pretty quickly.’
