Crewe Alexandra target Sam Clucas could be on his way to Football League newcomers Mansfield Town.

The 22-year-old Hereford United midfielder is ready to sign a two-year deal at Field Mill, according to latest reports.

Lincoln-born Clucas is said to have impressed Stags manager Paul Cox on their way to winning the Conference title last season. He was subsequently rewarded by being named as player-of-the-year at Edgar Street following nine goals in 44 games.

The Alex already missed out on another of their summer targets when winger Marvin Johnson agreed a new deal at Kidderminster Harriers earlier this week.
