Crewe Alexandra manager Steve Davis is still to make a final decision over who will lead his side this season.

Alex released Wembley skipper David Artell at the end of last term and the likes of Ashley Westwood and experienced goalkeeper Steve Phillips are obvious candiates to replace him.

Davis admitted he used the recent pre-season visit to the army base to fully check out the potential leadership qualities of his troops.

“I spoke to Westy at the end of the season about the captaincy situation once Dave Artell and Lee Bell left us,” Davis told Alex’s official website. ‘He is an obvious contender because he has had the armband in the past.

“There are other possible candidates. Steve [Phillips] is currently injured,” he continued. “I may have a club captain and he may well fill that role.”
