Alex Sign Liverpool’s Corey Whelan

|

Crewe Alexandra have completed the signing of Liverpool Under-23 captain Corey Whelan on loan until January 2019, the club have confirmed, becoming the sixth and final signing in the 2018 Summer transfer window.

Whelan, 20, attended the Alex’s academy sessions as a youngster but was signed to Liverpool’s academy at the Under-10 age group. After signing professional for Liverpool, he spent the second-half of last season gaining first-team experience at Yeovil Town.

The Republic of Ireland Under-21 international can play either at centre-back or at right-back but has made appearances for the Liverpool under-age teams at left-back and in midfield.

What should we expect from the signing of Whelan?

Whelan is another 6-foot defender who is more likely to play at right-back for us than at centre-back, especially when Eddie Nolan and George Ray are both fit. It seems that both him and Kevin O’Connor have been brought in directly for Harry Pickering and Paul Green after they got injured and loaning out Brad Walker has covered the wages that the 2 Irish players until January.
