Experienced Crewe Alexandra goalkeeper Steve Phillips could return to the squad for the weekend visit to Walsall.

“Alan deserves his place and it is up to Steve to try and get him out of the team” – Steve Davis

The 34-year-old ex-Bristol City, Bristol Rovers and Shrewsbury Town shot-stopper is yet to feature this season after recently undergoing a minor knee operation.

However, Phillips is now back in regular training and may well travel to the Banks’s Stadium, although he currently faces a real challenge to reclaim his first-team place from regular understudy Alan Martin.

Former Scottish Under-21 international Martin has made fifteen appearances so far this season since making his senior debut for the club in the Capital One Cup victory over Hartlepool United in August.

“At the moment, Alan deserves his place and it is up to Steve to try and get him out of the team,” manager Steve Davis told Alex’s official website. “We have been pleased with Alan, but he will know he has a real challenge on his hands now and has to keep on performing to a high standard to stay in.”
