Crewe Alexandra struck a goal in each half for an excellent 2-0 victory at Barnsley in their Capital One Cup first round meeting.

Midfielder Billy Waters turned in their opener from Liam Nolan’s cross-shot thirteen minutes before half-time – his first senior goal for the club.

Goalscorer Waters then set up skipper Matt Tootle for a well-timed second six minutes prior to the final whistle.

Recalled goalkeeper Ben Garratt had earlier denied Keith Treacy, whose free-kick was then cleared by George Ray before Conor Hourihane struck wide.

Waters chipped straight at goalkeeper Adam Davies for the visitors at the other end.

Former Crewe trialist Sam Winnall then spurned a couple of opportunities, until Tootle – who missed a penalty at the weekend – added a decisive second goal.

The two sides meet again in the league at Gresty Road this weekend.
