Alex Pay The Penalty At Hillsborough

A second-half penalty from Lee Gregory saw Sheffield Wednesday defeat Crewe Alexandra at Hillsborough last night, a result that sees the hosts move back into the play-off spots.

Manager Alex Morris named an unchanged starting 11 from Good Friday’s 3-1 home win against AFC Wimbledon with the versatile Tariq Uwakwe returning to the bench after injury.

The opening chance came in the 8th minute with Saido Berahino missing the target from close range before Nathaniel Mendez-Laing was denied by Dave Richards a minute later.

The hosts would win a penalty in the 53rd minute when Alex forward Scott Kashket brought down Mendez-Laing with Gregory sending Richards the wrong way. Midfielder Jack Hunt would drag a shot wide midway through the second half.

Our next couple of games sees the Alex host Ipswich Town in the final home game on Saturday before travelling to Lincoln City in the final game the following week.

What can we take out of this game?

We got another performance that’s been better than recent weeks – Morris changed things quickly with the back 4 moving to a back 5 after conceding chances early on though Berahino should have buried at least one of his early efforts.

Good to see Uwakwe back and potentially we’ll see him on Saturday, maybe in midfield instead of Harper as he won’t be eligible to play against his parent club.
