Crewe Alexandra were on the wrong end of an FA Cup shock as National League Eastleigh emerged with a 1-0 first round victory at Gresty Road.

Ben Strevens scored their winner from the penalty spot after substitute goalkeeper Dan Nizic upended Ross Lafayette with fifteen minutes remaining.

The Alex earlier had keeper Ben Garratt sent-off for bringing down Yemi Odubade outside the area.

Former Oxford United striker Odubade already saw an effort cleared off the line by Ben Nugent.

Home defender Nugent and Canadian striker Marcus Haber both threatened at the other end but Andy Drury flashed a reply wide and Odubade twice went close.

Crewe keeper Garratt then thwarted the lively Odubade, until later taking down the striker outside the box and being given a red card.

Josh Payne landed the free-kick on top of the net but Strevens settled it from the spot when substitute Lafayette’s progress was illegally checked by on loan keeper Nizic.
