Crewe Alexandra midfielder Ashley Westwood has been appointed as new club captain for this season.

The 22-year-old has already led the side through an unbeaten pre-season campaign and is viewed as the ideal replacement for David Artell, who left Gresty Road at the end of last season.

“Ash leads by example and his leadership comes from the quality he shows,” manager Steve Davis told Alex’s official website. “He can organise and lead and he is a local boy who wants to do well for the club.”

Davis had also considered experienced goalkeeper Steve Phillips and defender Adam Dugdale for the role.
