Crewe Alexandra once again allowed an early lead to slip as they exited the Capital One Cup by a 3-2 scoreline at League Two Bury.

On loan Chuks Aneke gave them a fifth-minute advantage but Shaun Beeley and Shaun Harrad’s penalty turned it around before the break.

Richard Hinds then added a third goal early in the second-half, with Harry Davis converting a penalty for the second successive game fifteen minutes from time.

AJ Leitch-Smith forced an early save from Rob Lainton for visitors who were without winger Byron Moore due to a groin injury.

But they still took the lead as Leitch-Smith’s cross was turned in via the underside of the crossbar by Aneke following his recent return from Arsenal.

Ryan Colclough then stabbed a Kelvin Mellor cross wide as the visitors chased another, while Alan Martin kept out Euan Holden’s reply and Andy Proctor hoisted over before Beeley equalised from a long throw into the area.

Boosted by that Tom Soares had a free-kick turned over by Martin and Ashley Grimes headed wide, until Colclough’s loose backpass witnessed Hinds brought down by Anthony Grant inside the area. Harrad drove home from the penalty spot.

Both Craig Jones and Grimes went close to adding to that before a third goal did arrive when Jones’ 49th minute corner was knocked back for Hinds to stab in.

The visitors had much to do and Aneke failed to seriously trouble Lainton on a couple of occasions and Leitch-Smith found the side-netting.

However, when Colclough was sent crashing by the keeper on 75 minutes, Davis did the rest from twelve-yards – but it wasn’t enough to signal a late revival.
