Crewe Alexandra remain hopeful young defender Kelvin Mellor will re-sign for them after making him an improved offer.

The 21-year-old has been the subject of a recent approach from Championship side Derby County despite less than a dozen senior appearances at Gresty Road.

That prompted Alex to increase their original twelve-month offer into a proposed three-year deal for Mellor, who is currently recovering from minor ankle surgery and returned yesterday from a short holiday.

“Kelvin is recovering well from his operation and he’s been able to get a bit of sunshine on his back this week,” manager Steve Davis confirmed to This is Staffordshire. “We have already made him a couple of offers, improved offers, and there has been a little debate about the length of contract and maybe a bit ore money.

“We felt our offer of one year could help him push him on to the next level, but he’s looking for a bit more security,” he added. “Hopefully we can meet in the middle.”
