Alex Held At Bottom Placed Sutton

A goal from Courtney Baker-Richardson was not enough for Crewe Alexandra to defeat bottom-placed Sutton United at Gander Green Lane last night.

Manager Lee Bell made 1 change from Saturday’s 3-2 home win against Doncaster Rovers as Elliott Nevitt came in for Aaron Rowe, who dropped down to the bench.

The game’s opening chance came in the 11th minute as Rio Adebisi’s cross was turned goalwards by Nevitt whose shot was saved by Steve Arnold before the Alex took the lead 6 minutes later as Baker-Richardson curled in from just outside the area. The hosts levelled on 28 minutes as a corner wasn’t cleared with defender John scoring from close range before the Alex would have efforts from CBR and Shilow Tracey before the break, the latter hitting the bar from an Adebisi lay-off.

A Mickey Demetriou long throw would be cleared to Connor O’Riordan who curled wide from the edge of the area 5 minutes after the break before Adebisi would have a header saved just after the hour. The final 10 minutes saw substitute Aiden O’Brien hit the post for the hosts before Conor Thomas fired wide from a Demetriou nod down for the visitors.

The next couple of games see the Alex host Bristol Rovers in the FA Cup 2nd Round on Saturday before travelling to Grimsby Town the following Saturday.

Final Thoughts:

This is a result that, on its own, looks a poor one however it’s another point on the board with other teams around us not winning.

A well-taken goal from CBR, he won the ball and would finish well but the finishing on the night was poor with only 4 shots on target from 22 that were taken.
