Crewe Alexandra slipped back to the bottom of the table with a 2-1 defeat to Southend United at Gresty Road.

All the goals came at the start of the second-half, with on loan Joe Pigott netting twice and either side of Brad Inman’s reply.

David Mooney had earlier gone close for the visitors, until Stephen Kingsley cleared off the line, while Pigott struck the crossbar and had another effort blocked by George Ray.

Kingsley also located the woodwork with a free-kick towards the other end, but it was on loan Charlton Athletic striker Pigott turning in Ryan Leonard’s delivery at the start of the second period.

Two minutes later Inman strode clear and drove under Dan Bentley to equalise, although the hosts weren’t level for long as Pigott headed his second after Dave Worrall’s deflected shot came back off the bar.

Southend keeper Bentley was later called into action by both Marcus Haber and Chris Atkinson, but the Railwaymen’s problems continued with a third straight home defeat.
