Crewe Alexandra conceded an interval lead as Barnsley came from behind for a 2-1 victory at Gresty Road.

The Railwaymen were in front with just over half-an-hour played when defender Jon Guthrie diverted in Marcus Haber’s shot.

But former Alex trialist Sam Winnall equalised from Conor Hourihane’s 53rd minute corner, and Alfie Mawson then despatched a 20-yard free-kick past Ben Garratt midway through the second-half.

Garratt had already blocked from Manchester United loanee Ashley Fletcher before his opposite number Adam Davies kept out Brad Inman’s reply.

He could do nothing though as Haber’s effort deflected off Guthrie for the opening goal from a George Cooper free-kick.

However, Winnall equalised from close-range following the break before Mawson produced the winner from a free-kick fourteen minutes later.

Home keeper Garratt later thwarted Fletcher, Winnall and on loan substitute Harry Chapman with the aid of the woodwork.
