Crewe Alexandra were left financially blown away as they found summer targets snapped up by a couple of their rivals, according to assistant manager Neil Baker.

“We made Clucas an offer we thought he was happy with and he was impressed with the set-up” – Neil Baker

The Railwaymen have recently missed out on Aldershot Town striker Danny Hylton, as he instead opted on a move to Alex’s opening day visitors Rotherham United.

Meanwhile, Hereford United midfielder Sam Clucas was another who slipped through the net and will this season be lining up for League Two newcomers Mansfield Town.

“We made Clucas an offer we thought he was happy with and he was impressed with the set-up,” Baker told the Crewe Chronicle. “But then Mansfield blew us out of the water.

“Danny was less important to us but we’ve liked him for a while and I feel he could have become a crowd favourite,” he added. “But Rotherham blew us out of the water. It is disappointing but that’s how it is here. We just move on.”
