The first of this season’s Academy Alumni columns looks at the first-round games in the Carabao Cup that have taken place over the last couple of weekends.

August 29th:

Nicky Maynard was not involved for Mansfield Town in their 4-0 defeat at Preston North End.

Oliver Turton played the full game for Blackpool in their 5-4 penalties defeat at Stoke City (game ended 0-0 at full-time) while Nick Powell played 74 minutes for the hosts.

Gareth Evans played 76 minutes, scored and was booked for Portsmouth in their 3-1 penalties victory at Stevenage (game ended 3-3 at full-time).

September 4th:

Ben Garratt played the full game for Burton Albion in their 4-2 penalties win at home to Accrington Stanley (game ended 1-1 at full-time).

September 5th:

Cheyenne Dunkley was not involved for Sheffield Wednesday in their 4-2 penalties win at Walsall (game finished 0-0 at full-time).

Shaun Miller came on for the final 9 mins for Bolton Wanderers in their 2-1 home defeat against Bradford City.

Perry Ng, Billy Sass-Davies (scored), Harry Pickering, Luke Murphy, Ryan Wintle, Oli Finney (71 mins), Owen Dale (booked) and Charlie Kirk all started for Crewe Alexandra in their 2-1 home defeat against Lincoln City. Callum Ainley (19 mins) was a used substitute with Regan Griffiths, Josh Lundstram, Travis Johnson, Tyreece Onyeka and Sam Booth were all unused subs for the hosts while James Jones played the full game for the visitors.

Both Kelvin Mellor and Harry Davis played the full game for Morecambe in their 4-3 penalties win at Grimsby Town while AJ Leitch-Smith was not involved for the visitors.

Billy Jones came on for the final 14 mins for Rotherham United in their 4-2 penalties defeat at Salford City.

Ryan Colclough played the first 73 mins and was booked for Scunthorpe United in their 2-1 home defeat against Port Vale. Both Dan Trickett-Smith and Alex Hurst were unused subs for the visitors.

George Ray was not involved for Tranmere Rovers in their 8-7 penalties defeat against Harrogate Town.

George Cooper played 89 mins for Plymouth Argyle in their 3-2 home win against Queens Park Rangers while Byron Moore was not involved for the hosts.

Chris Clements played the full game for Cheltenham Town in their 1-0 win at Peterborough United.
