Academy Alumni #2 – August 13th 2018

Welcome to the second Alex Alumni column which looks at how the products of the Crewe Alexandra academy have done in the Premier League and Football League over the weekend.

We start in the Premier League with Ashley Westwood who played the full 90 minutes in Burnley’s 0-0 draw at Southampton yesterday.

Moving into the Championship now where Nick Powell was on the score-sheet again for Wigan in their 3-2 defeat at Aston Villa. He played 68 minutes before being substituted whilst Cheyenne Dunkley also played the full game (getting booked in the process).

Luke Murphy played the first 66 minutes for Bolton Wanderers in their 2-2 draw at home to Bristol City.

Billy Jones made a 93rd minute substitute appearance for Rotherham United in their 1-0 home win over Ipswich Town.

Onto League 1, where Junior Brown came on as a 79th minute sub for Coventry City in their goal-less draw at AFC Wimbledon.

Oliver Turton played the full game for Blackpool in their 2-1 home defeat against Portsmouth as did Gareth Evans for the visitors. Max Clayton (Blackpool) was not involved.

Bradford City lost 2-0 at home to Barnsley with Kelvin Mellor playing the full 90 minutes for the hosts.

Liam Nolan was an unused substitute for Accrington Stanley in their 2-1 defeat at Bristol Rovers.

George Cooper was an unused substitute for Peterborough United in their 4-1 win at Rochdale.

Ryan Colclough, who made a permanent move from Wigan to Scunthorpe United on deadline day, made his debut as an 81st minute substitute in their 1-1 draw at home to Walsall.

Into League 2, where David Vaughan (90 mins) and Matt Tootle (first 69 mins) both started for Notts County in their 3-2 loss at Cambridge United.

Billy Waters played the final 16 minutes for Northampton Town in their 2-2 draw at Carlisle United.

Will Appleyard was not involved for Stevenage in their 3-1 victory away at Crawley.

Michael O’Connor made his first start (73 minutes) for Lincoln in their 4-1 home win against Swindon Town.

Harry Davis played the full game for Grimsby Town in their 2-0 victory at Macclesfield Town.

Byron Moore was not involved for Bury in their 1-0 defeat at Milton Keynes Dons.

AJ Leitch-Smith made his Morecambe debut for the final 25 minutes in their 2-0 home defeat against Exeter City whilst Jason Oswell was an unused substitute.

Perry Ng, Harry Pickering, James Jones and Ryan Wintle all played the full game for Crewe Alexandra in their 1-0 defeat at Newport County. Charlie Kirk (53) and Callum Ainley shared 90 minutes whilst Ben Garratt, Oliver Finney and Lewis Reilly were all unused substitutes.

Ritchie Sutton played only the first half for Tranmere in their 1-0 home win against Cheltenham Town.
