New signing George Abbey has been told by Dario Gradi that his international career must now come second to his club career.

The Nigerian defender follows in the foot steps of Ademole Bankole and Efe Sodje, but Dario wants Abbey to put his international career on hold as African internationals are generally out on duty for weeks at a time.

Dario told CreweAlex.net:’When an agent suggest signing an African, American or even Australian I am against it because they are away too far too often for my liking.

‘We have spoken to George and I think he has come to the decision, which will mean he won’t be playing for Nigeria for the time being. He wants to make a success of things here.’

Abbey has won many caps for Nigeria having played in the 2004 African Nations Cup whilst he was a Macclesfield player. However, he’ll have to stick to his promise if he isn’t to incur the wrath of Dario that the likes of Efe Sodje reportedly received.

Meanwhile, Abbey looks set to make his Alex debut tonight against Derby County. Kick off is at 7:45pm and kids go free with a paying adult.
