Gudjon Thordasson will be looking to the transfer window to save Crewe Alexandra as they failed to close the gap at the bottom with a humilliating 5-1 defeat at Northampton.
In the absense of James Bailey and Dennis Lawrence, last weeks hero Danny O’Donnell was in at centre back and Mark Carrington was in midfield after impressing in the 7-0 thrashing of chester in midweek.
However it only took 2 mins for Crewe to fall behind at sixfields and from then on the tone was set for the afternoon as Northampton ran riot.
New Northampton signing Billy Clarke enjoyed a dream start to a dream debut as he put town ahead after only 2 minutes. Danny Jackman then added a second on 19 minutes from a free kick as Julian Baudet saw red for the alex.
Crewe fans had hope of a point on the half hour mark as Colin Daniel netted his first goal for the club. Crewe then enjoyed some good play and were unlucky not to equalise as they went into half time the better side.
However just ten mins into the second half the game was out of sight as Clarke, on a months loan from Ipswich Town, scored his second goal for the club. Crewe were then in free fall and just 2 mins later it was 4-1 as Liam Davies netted for town with 30 minutes to go.
Unlike Crewe, forward Clarke wasn’t finished yet and he walked away with the matchball after sending Tomlinson the wrong way from the spot after Colin Daniel gave away the penalty.
Crewe travel to Peteborough on tuesday and face another tough task on Saturday when Tranmere visit gresty road. The honeymoon is over now for Thordasson and Crewe fans will be looking for some much needed additions to the squad to save the alex from the dreaded drop.
