100 Up For Artell But Latics Rained On His Parade

|

First-half goals from Peter Clarke and Chris O’Grady extended Oldham Athletic’s unbeaten run to 7 games in all competitions as they beat Crewe Alexandra at the Alexandra Stadium yesterday afternoon.

Manager David Artell made named an unchanged line-up for the fourth straight game whilst there were changes on the bench as George Ray returned from injury and Owen Dale returned after his loan spell with Altrincham as defenders Michael Raynes and Kevin O’Connor watched from the stands.

The opening chance fell to the Alex in the third minute as Callum Ainley was played in behind the Latics defence with on-loan Leicester City keeper Daniel Iversen making the save with his legs before chances came from the visitors from a Mohamed Maouche free-kick then from fellow midfielder Christopher Missilou in the opening quarter-hour. The opening goal, which was coming based on the play, came on 17 minutes as centre-back Clarke was allowed to bring the ball out from the back, under no pressure, was allowed to shoot into Ben Garratt’s top corner from 30 yards out.

After a quiet period, Iversen made a save from Charlie Kirk before the second goal of the game came 5 minutes before the break with Cameron Dummigan’s throw-in taken to O’Grady whose effort the corner of the penalty area beating Garratt at the far-post.

It was the same story in the second-half as Garratt had to make another couple of saves from Missilou then Sam Surridge before Artell brought on Ray, Dale and Chris Porter in a triple-change which saw Eddie Nolan, Kirk and Jordan Bowery in 3 like-for-like changes. Dale almost scored with his first touch, having his effort saved, after Porter’s shot was blocked by a defender before Ray had one cleared off the line from a Harry Pickering corner.

The next game is a trip to Exeter City next Saturday afternoon.

What have we learnt from this game?

Doesn’t really need saying after that performance but we need to compete better all over the pitch but, in particular, in midfield areas. Jones and Wintle as a pairing doesn’t seem to work so i’d change to add either Ng or Pickering and have an extra pair of legs in there and push Ainley and Kirk closer to a central forward (probably Bowery), playing a 4-3-3 formation.
